„The Tube with a Hat” is a bench-mark short for the father-son relationship out of the infinity of domestic micro-universes. Both Gabriel Spahiu, playing the father and Marian Bratu, in the role of the child, transmit the warmth of a relationship built out of little details carefully unraveled. Even though he tries to play the tough parent, the father is the opposite of what he seems: every „no” is a „yes”, every initial turn down means a wish came true afterwards. This is an ambivalence that gives shape to a complex, warm, humane character.

The characters are watched through the camera without their personal space being invaded. Radu Jude keeps the distance between himself and his characters , progressively unraveling their relationship, their universe and the way they see eachother.

„The Tube with a Hat” is one of those shorts that can be revisited several times, as each time the viewer is wrapped in the paradoxical warmth of this cold, rainy, timeless space in the middle of nowhere, in Romania.

Reviews:

„There are no big plot developments, no deep heart-to-hearts between father and son.  It’s just a simple ‘road story,’ a little slice of life in this poor rural family’s day. But, simple or not, it holds our interest.” (John Arkelian – www.artsforum.ca )

„Lampa cu căciulă is a sensitively told story about the love between a father and a son. The director Radu Jude approaches his characters carefully and always leaves enough room to make them interesting and ambiguous. The camera follows the events from a distance and never gets too close” (NiclasGillberg – pov.imv.au.dk )

Lines:

„Marian, it can’t be that tube, that’s what happened last time.”
„The way it does, it should be the tube with a hat.”
‚Stop arguing with me. It’s like I’m not up to it anymore.”
„Look at him, the egg that makes the hen!”
„Doesn’t it?”
