PLOT SUMMARY
“The Graduates” is a Romanian movie from 1986, directed by Nicolae Corjos. It tells the love story of two freshmen (first-year high school students) who fall in love. Mihai (Ştefan Bănică Jr.) is a provincial boy who attends a high school in Bucharest, where his passion for philosophy and mathematics will be overshadowed by love, while Dana (Oana Sârbu) is a chess enthusiast.
Their romance will be full of naturalness but will undergo many trials. Alongside the young actors, other well-executed roles belong to actors Ion Caramitru and Tamara Buciuceanu, who play the idealistic history teacher, the class tutor nicknamed “Socrates” by students, and the strict mathematics teacher nicknamed “Isosceles” respectively.
CRITICAL REVIEWS
“Dramatic or humorous events, according to the authors, through which the students of a tenth-grade class pass from retake to graduation. Continuing the Love Declaration, the film revisits the characters, adding combinations and complications. The story is somewhat idyllic, but the director demonstrates a ‘good hand’ in choosing a cast that, although made up of unknowns, has lasted for four series. In ‘The High Schoolers,’ a catchy hit song is also launched, ‘High School Years,’ by Florin Bogardo (Pr. ACIN), which will become the musical emblem of the series. 5,500,000 young people stormed the cinemas.” – Tudor Caranfil
