CINEMAIUBIT International Student Film Festival was founded in 1996 and after only two editions it has become international. Since then it has been developing continuously, being not an ordinary festival, but also a cultural and educational platform for the cinema lovers.
Along its 28 editions, CINEMAIUBIT has become a launch pad for the young Romanian filmmakers, a space where the public gets in contact with students productions, and with the future of the Romanian cinema, an absolutely necessary test in the formation of a professional future.
Over time, CINEMAIUBIT has rewarded names that shortly became emblems of the New Romanian Cinema (NRC): Cristian Mungiu, Corneliu Porumboiu, Cătălin Mitulescu, Călin Peter Netzer, Dana Bunescu, Marius Panduru, Cătălin Cristuțiu, Paul Negoescu, Adina Pintilie, Ivana Mladenovic, Tudor Cristian Jurgiu, Lucia Chicoș etc.
Over decades, the Festival is currently not only a guarantor of quality, but also an event already consecrated in the Romanian Cultural landscape.

Our festival celebrates its 28th anniversary!
At 28, a young man embodies clarity of purpose while still radiating youthful vigor. Life is truly beautiful at this age. You’ve gathered cherished memories, forged lasting friendships, and a bright future beckons you.Happy birthday, charming friend! Allow us to see you, to know you, and to share in the remarkable gifts you bring to our annual gathering.
Happy birthday, CineMAiubit! Happy birthday to you, our mature student, our eternal learner, who has never strayed from the place where you fell in love with cinema, keeping your eyes filled with stories ever since!
May you always be cherished and remain close to us!
Liviu Lucaci
Rector of UNATC

I have a lot to say about CineMAiubit.
For instance, I could say I’ve known it since 1996 when it was founded by Elisabeta Bostan. I could also say that in 1997, during my second year of study, I made a documentary about this festival, and I struggled to create something meaningful from a material that I had grown to dislike. A brief parenthesis: my professors often told me: “This documentary will be wonderful ten years from now, or twenty years from now…”. However, when you’re 20, you don’t have the patience to wait that long to determine if a film* is good; you want to appreciate it then! Unfortunately, I didn’t really like my documentary at the time. In 2017, we screened a digital copy of the film at CineMAiubit, and it was a fantastic success.I could also share the emotions I felt when, in the Council Room of the Romanian Filmmakers Union (UCIN), Elisabeta Bostan took me by the shoulders and announced in front of everyone, “From now on, Doru will lead this festival!”. I could also remember the nights spent with students in the lab, waiting for the 35mm prints to be ready for the next day’s screening.
As you can see, behind this festival lies a long history filled with people, films, and, most importantly, encounters. This history does not make the festival old; rather, it highlights its consistency and longevity—qualities that are fundamental to any artistic manifestation and, indeed, to life itself.
Doru Nițescu
President of the UNATC Senate
Festival’s Director

When the waters around you become turbulent, art serves as both an anchor and a bridge. Amid the storm, it can be your refuge. Art is a potent weapon in the fight against the monsters that arise from the union of dormant reason and dulled senses. Through its immersive nature, film art can transport you beyond closed borders. Enveloped in darkness and confined within four walls, you begin to see the projector beam as a ray of hope, and on the big screen, you find a half-open window to freedom. This is exemplified by many student films created during such dark times, which have been revived through the Active Archive program.
As we remember this December—often haunted more by insomnia than the holiday spirit—we celebrate 35 years of creative freedom for film students to express themselves openly. It is the responsibility of our entire community to ensure that film remains the true embodiment of freedom, rather than just an illusion. So, let’s enjoy new films and ensure that CineMAiubit remains a certainty, not just a rhetorical question.
Vlad Ioachimescu
Dean of the Film Faculty
