„— I am frightened, grandpa!… Do you hear? […]
— The people in the house are crying, he said. They miss the one who died, that’s why they are crying. („In the Coach-house”, by A.P. Checkhov)”
Radu Jude, one of the most interesting contemporary film directors, present constantly at film festivals around the world with short films and exceptional feature films, directed „It Can Pass Through the Wall”. All the appreciations Radu Jude received are supported by the fact that he does not cheat the viewer’s expectations: from the first short film „The Tube with a Hat” to the most recent documentary „Dead Country”, the director manages to provide an original perspective in his films, and „It Can Pass Through the Wall” is no exception to the rule.
Sofia stays overnight at her grandfather’s and the girl has the first contact with the notion of death: a neighbor has committed suicide, and a wake is being held in his apartment.
The short film is created in one shot in which Sofia is constantly followed, showing subtly her emotions. She cannot sleep and she wants to go home at her parents because she is afraid of the dead person. „You should fear the living, Sofia, not the dead. The living mess you up”, one of her grandfather’s friends tries to comfort her, attempt that obviously scares her even more.
The high quality of the director’s conception makes the selection of the movie to be part of the Romanian shorts online collection of Cinepub an inspired choice.
„At a first glance, «It can pass through the wall» can be looked at as an example of pure realist cinema: the short film is shot in a single frame sequence, with the camera focusing permanently on a little girl (the excellent Sofia Nicolaescu discovered by Radu Jude when he shot «Everybody in our family», in 2012) who spends the night in her grandfather’s old apartment.” (Ionuţ Mareş – www.filmele-maresalului.blogspot.ro )
„— She opened the doors, called the elevator and put her head down. Her head got caught between the elevator and the floor. And it got pressed so hard that it got crushed like a pumpkin.”
