PLOT SUMMARY
Arad, 1968. Mihai and Emil are two brothers of Romanian-German descent who have only one thing in common: their concern for their ailing father. Mihai, the older brother, is a doctor and, with a somewhat reluctant heart, an informant for the security forces. He seems to have come to terms with his life in Ceaușescu’s Romania. Emil passionately fights against the Stalinist imprints, often finding himself in situations where only his older brother’s prudence can save him.
The two, along with their father, set out for Dresden—the closest place where he can undergo the operation that might save him. However, the politically unstable context derails their plan. On the way, they encounter Soviet tanks heading towards Czechoslovakia and are forced to reach a temporary camp in East Germany. With the German-Czechoslovak border closed, the only way to be repatriated is to obtain a transit visa through West Germany.
