PLOT SUMMARY

Sentenced to 10 years of hard labor after the 1907 peasant revolt and after spending a few years on the front lines, Manolache Preda returns to his native village. His wife has left him and sold his land, while the authorities regard him with hostility, the people with suspicion, and the children hide from him.

In order to lead a normal life, Manolache gets a job working for the nobleman Leon. Here, he falls in love with Ruxandra, a young woman from a poor family. But when the nobleman is murdered by two enraged peasants, the blame falls on the former convict. Manolache flees and hides in the mountains. Hunted relentlessly, he is eventually captured and shot. His death tragically concludes the fate of an innocent man.
