PLOT SUMMARY

A medium-length documentary film by director Jean Georgescu, dedicated to the pioneers of Romanian cinema. It offers a retrospective of the most important films, a valuable collection of images, actors, and places long since vanished.

At first, it feels like you’re watching a communist propaganda film, but the documentary quickly transforms into a testimonial-style presentation of the early days of Romanian cinema.

CRITICAL REVIEWS:

“Beyond any other possible defining traits, what remains paramount in Jean Georgescu’s work is his unwavering faith in cinematic beauty. (…) He was drawn to the screen not by chance, but by an exceptional calling. He set out for the wondrous world of moving shadows, fully aware from the very beginning of the immense difficulties of the path he had chosen, of the overwhelming responsibility imposed by the word “Art”, as the master used to explain to his disciples. He could have borne the title of Artist — with a capital “A” — while remaining merely a theater or film actor, whether on stage or on screen. Within the complex machinery of cinema, he could have been just an actor, dabbling — like so many others — in related pursuits… But he wanted, more than anything else in the world, to become a film director, nurturing from the very beginning of his career the ambitions of the “total author” — ambitions that, until then, no one in Romania had ever dared to harbor.”Olteea Vasilescu, istoria-artei.ro

TRIVIA:

  • Jean Georgescu, a Romanian director, actor, and screenwriter, was born on February 12, 1904, in Bucharest.
  • He worked continuously for four decades in Romania and France, focusing primarily on the comedy genre.
  • His inspiration often came from the works of I. L. Caragiale, and his film adaptations (particularly “A Stormy Night”) remain cornerstones of Caragiale-inspired cinema.
  • He authored the book “Dictionary of Cinema”, published by Editura Univers Enciclopedic in 1997.
  • After graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Dramatic Arts, he made his acting debut in the 1920s, performing in various theater companies alongside renowned actors of the time.
  • He left for France in 1929, where he worked as a director and screenwriter.
  • After returning to Romania in the late 1930s and early 1940s, he directed the film “A Stormy Night” (1942), considered a cinematic masterpiece. The film’s cast included prominent figures from Romanian theater and cinema: Alexandru Giugaru (Lord Dumitrache), Radu Beligan (Rică Venturiano), George Demetru (Chiriac), Ştefan Iordănescu-Bruno (Nae Ipingescu), Jean Moscopol (the Armenian), Florica Demion (Ziţa), Miluţă Gheorghiu (I.D. Ionescu), Maria Maximilian (Veta), and George Ciprian (Ghiţă Ţircădău).
  • During the communist era, Jean Georgescu was considered by the authorities and the heads of production companies — who controlled the film budgets — to be a “bourgeois director”, and for this reason he was marginalized.
