PLOT SUMMARY

By adapting the stories compiled by Ion Creangă under the famous title ‘Memories from Childhood,’ Elisabeta Bostan brings to the screen the most wonderful pages of Romanian children’s literature. On Christmas Eve, in his small house in the Țicău neighborhood of Iași, Ion Creangă, portrayed by the great actor Ștefan Ciubotărașu, nostalgically remembers his childhood spent in his native village Humulești, the mischief and adventures attributed in the book to the character Nică a lui Ștefan a Petrei. The boy’s performer, Ion Bocancea, shapes the character with captivating naturalness and candor. With his pranks and mischiefs, Nică attracted all the troubles of the world, always getting into the biggest scrapes, which he had to resolve himself.

TRIVIA

  • Ion Bocancea played the role of Nică al lui Ștefan a Petrei in the 1965 film ‘The Oak Cuckoo’ as well.
  • The film is loosely based on Romanian author Ion Creanga’s autobiographical book “Memories of my childhood” written between 1881-1889 and wholly published in 1892.
  • In a 2019 interview, Ion Bocancea recalled the tests to get his role in the movie and in particular the one for the nude bath scene. “There were all kinds of tests: photo, filming rehearsals, but the most difficult was the one in which we had to undress for the scene in ‘Taking a bath’. This test was held at the Village Museum and it was full of people there, people were looking at us like a circus. We had to strip down to our bare skin and make a route with thorns, fences, and obstacles. We were told that after we undressed, we would find the clothes at the end of the trail. No one wanted to undress, but I told myself that no one would know me anyway. I came out first, but there were other tests where I was first. I had horse riding and swimming tests, all kinds of sports tests“, said Bocancea.
