Critical reviews:
- “The image was extraordinarily beautiful, the sound was very well done, and the special effects were great. Most people don’t realize how much effort goes into these kinds of details, which is why I didn’t want to overlook them. To give you a general idea, color correction requires at least four meticulous eyes and a lot of patience, not to mention how many cups of coffee are involved in achieving good special effects (let’s not forget editing either), and the longer the film, the more coffee is usually needed.” – Emily Noejovich, Liternet Agenda
- “Unlike his younger brother, the film suggests that he, the older one, is forced to confront the whole situation, to understand it for what it is. Therefore, he must leave the comfortable world of childhood dreams. This conclusion is, however, suggested by the metaphorical images mostly placed around the abandoned ship and subtle details, such as the mother’s gaze as the brothers return home without their father. In this sense, the film presents the journey to adulthood as an involuntary loss of innocence, accompanied by pain.” – Emily Noejovich, Agenda Liternet
- “Where No Ships Go” (dir. Vlad Buzăianu, producer: Anamaria Antoci – Tangaj Production) reiterates the myth of Romain Kalbris-style boyhood, but suffers from the same problem as all Romanian films featuring children: a lack of credible young actors with natural talent. The problem is due to the casting criteria, which are exclusively aesthetic.” – Iulia Vucmanovici, Agenda Liternet
TRIVIA:
- Vlad Buzăianu graduated from Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest and the Faculty of Psychology. “I’ve always loved cinema, I’ve been a film buff since I was a kid, but for me, directors were like gods, it seemed very difficult to get into filmmaking. I decided to make a film when I was around 30, and that’s how I made my first film, ”Dreams on Sale”, a film made with friends. Three of us friends were involved in this project, and the three of us produced the film, which was unexpectedly well received. At a festival where I was with the short film, I met the producer Anamaria Antoci, who liked the film”, the director said in an interview for Radio Romania International.
- After the auspicious meeting with producer Anamaria Antoci, the director presented her with the script for the film “Where No Ships Go”. They made it together, with the help of the production company Tangaj Film.
- The director’s first film, “Dreams on Sale“, is also available on CINEPUB.
