Synopsis

Foreword: The film follows the death of a man, Anton (Marin Grigore) — a renowned pianist — and his attempts to repair a great misfortune in his final days. Boguță sets the story in the context of a detective film. The investigation led by Commissioner Mihnea Nicoară (Teo Corban) takes us from place to place, through a minimalist and oppressive Bucharest, to the man’s relatives, colleagues, and friends, revealing mainly intimate/ illegitimate (?) secrets of his family. CRITICAL REVIEWS:

“Legacy” is one of the most mature debuts in Romanian cinema in recent years. It also does something unexpected. It proposes a cinematic approach that is quite different from what we are used to: radically different from the old school and quite distant from the new school. It is a mature and courageous film. Signs of Puiu and Porumboiu? Or perhaps more from Jacques Audiard?”Vasile Ernu, ziarulmetropolis.ro

“The film is an existential drama thriller that shows us traces of fundamental things: a life has passed through here!”Vasile Ernu, ziarulmetropolis.ro

“Doru (Dorian Boguță) knows the acting world well. (…) He combines very well the type of VIP actor, proven and skilled in the field (Bucur, Téglás, Corban, Ifrim) with the glamorous VIP actor (Mădălina Ghenea), but without lowering the level of the film. And above all, he brings the freshness of a debut actor, such as Irina Rădulescu/ Ana in the lead role. (…) He casts actors of a certain type to play roles that are seemingly opposite to their style, as in the case of Téglás — who plays the bad boy, a drug dealer from high society. Or even Mădălina Ghenea, who plays a tragic role with great success: a tragic beauty well played.”Vasile Ernu, ziarulmetropolis.ro

“The existential crisis of an artist who finds out he has little time left to live and wants to settle scores with those around him, even in a sick way, was in itself a sufficiently compelling subject. This is evident in some of the flashback sequences, the best of which is one in which Anton and his friend, played by István Téglás, smoke weed against a backdrop of psychedelic music, all amplifying the patient’s melancholy. Why it needed to be treated indirectly, under the guise of a sometimes confusing police thriller, which requires other conventions and a different kind of reception, remains unclear. (…) And this makes a car chase sequence, another with surveillance, and the occasional appearance of music meant to induce tension seem like they’re from a different movie. One that wants to be an authentic thriller, but is held back by its ambitions to be a serious auteur film.”Ionuț Mareș, ziarulmetropolis.ro

“It is noteworthy that Legacy stands at the intersection between policier, neo-noir, and the values (aesthetic, at least) of the New Romanian Cinema.”Iulia Blaga, filmsinframe.com

“It is, however, a film about love and its limits, about its faces (not all of them bright), about loss, acceptance, and sacrifice, all carefully crafted on the cinematic page with the help of a perfectly chosen cast.”Michaela Platon, radioromaniacultural.ro

“It’s a fake detective story. It is more of an investigation into complicated interpersonal relationships, complicated also due to the introverted nature of the pianist — who is played by Marin Grigore, if not perfectly, then certainly appropriately. The film borrows something from the style of films by Cristian Mungiu or Radu Muntean, as critic Ionuț Mareș aptly observed in his review at the time of the premiere. There is also something mysterious about it, but the mystery lies more in the characters’ way of being.”Mircea Morariu, hotnews.ro

“Based largely on dialogue, “Legacy” begins with a sequence lasting about ten minutes in which Commissioner Nicoară walks from one room to another in the pianist’s apartment, asking questions of the man’s sister (Irina Rădulescu) and her partner (Lucian Ifrim) and receiving answers (apparently clarifying ones), with all the subjects and predicates on the table. Soon, the second technique that Boguță frequently uses in the film appears for the first time: flashbacks, from which we understand that the testimonies of those under investigation are selective, and that things are somewhat more complicated than they let on. The film continues in this ping-pong between investigation and flashback until it finally reaches boiling point.”Emil Vasilache, cinepub.ro

“Both the narrative formulas and the idea of theme are devices through which the author lures his talent into the open field in order to showcase it. Boguță’s skill is evident, even if obstructed by the construct.”Emil Vasilache, cinepub.ro

TRIVIA:

  • “Legacy” marks the directorial debut of actor Dorian Boguță.
  • The film had its world premiere at the International Francophone Film Festival (FIFF) in Namur, Belgium, and was then screened in one of the competitions at Cottbus.
  • The story is inspired by a real event in Dorian Boguță’s life, he tells filmsinframe.com, when his sister’s child disappeared without a trace.Later, however, he reworked the story and it took on a different dimension, becoming a final product that has nothing in common with the original story except for the fact that there is a disappearance around which the plot revolves.
  • In an interview with Iulia Blaga (suplimentuldecultura.ro), actor Teo Corban discusses his collaboration with Dorian Boguță and, more generally, with a first-time director: “Working with a first-time director is, broadly speaking, more adventurous. The search is more unexpected, the tentative steps are more anxious, I often feel like a trapeze artist performing without a safety net. I also think I put in extra effort to make the film. Otherwise, things are natural, normal. (…) But with Dorian Boguță, things went much more smoothly.”
  • Regarding the choice of trav shots and filming technique, Boguță states: “I didn’t have enough money to build more. The entire film – except for the final sequence at the police station and the one with Mădălina Ghenea, also at the station – is composed of sequence shots. I didn’t have the money to play around with the framing, but, on the other hand… well, I’m limiting myself, I don’t have money for 40 days of filming, so let’s use what we have as much as possible: how about filming the sequence in a single shot? Could I capture everything? I think I managed it with Barbu (Bălășoiu), because when you cut in a frame, I want the cut to be like a blink, so you don’t feel it at all.”
  • Ana’s role is Irina Rădulescu’s first role in a film, after a long period of working only in theater.
  • The order in which the sequences were filmed was the order of the locations in the film, largely following the chronological order of the story.
  • The director chose the song “A Place for Me” by the band URMA for the soundtrack. Mani Gutău (the band’s lead singer) says of this encounter between the song and the film: “Theoretically, the film “Legacy” (“Urma” in Romanian) is not about Urma’s music. Practically, Urma’s music is in the film “Legacy”.“Somewhere between theory and practice, the film and Urma’s music follow the same path, outside of time. From one heart to another. I hope that this wonderful story, created by an even more wonderful team, will receive the attention it deserves.”

• “It’s not rape if it’s you. (…) It’s not rape. You’re helping her.” – Anton Ropot (Marin Grigore)
